Dogwood in Bloom

For the last several weeks, the Dogwood trees in and around Huntsville have been in full bloom; some white and some pink. Two weeks ago we visited the Huntsville Botanical Garden just to see their majestic 100-year old Dogwood tree. Yep. That teeny, tiny person standing in front of the tree is Nancy. The tree is 25 feet high and 45 feet wide.

In 1995 this tree was about to become a victim of road construction in Huntsville. The Landscape Management of the City of Huntsville developed a plan to raise money through the elementary schools to pay to transplant the tree into the Botanical Garden. The tree was placed onto the bed of a house moving trailer. The height from the road bed was critical at this juncture for there were numerous traffic lights and power lines to cross on the five mile trek to the Botanical Garden. The Transportation Department was able to push up most of the traffic wires without having to disconnect them at each pole. With a police escort the tree set off on its journey at a speed of three miles per hour. With extraordinary care the Dogwood has thrived in its new home.
