50th Anniversary Celebration

Last Saturday I brought Nancy home from the rehab hospital for a couple hours so we could "practice" being together in our house. The purpose was to see if there were obstacles to her getting around and what could be done to avoid those obstacles. Since it was September 16th and exactly 50 years since our wedding, I planned a little surprise; flowers, a cake, and a candle. She did manage a little smile after the struggle getting up the steps into the kitchen from our garage. So, how is she today, a week later?

She's still a patient at the Healthsouth Rehabilitation Hospital here in Huntsville, but it seems she does more and more each day headed toward recovering as much of her motor skills as possible. She had X-rays and a CT scan done on Monday at Huntsville Hospital that showed she no longer needs the neck brace you see in the picture above. On Thursday evening she ate dinner with her right hand. If you had seen how little she could do with her right arm just 5 weeks ago, you would understand my adulation.

It looks like her release date is Wednesday or Thursday next week. She will be transitioning to outpatient status after that for who knows how long. But she will be home. Oh yes. About the obstacles; mainly the steps into and out of the house. On Wednesday I'm having a rail chair installed that will move her up and down the steps from the garage into the kitchen. I also installed several grab bars in our shower. And I bought a transport chair (not a wheel chair) from Amazon. I'm sure we'll discover some other obstacles as time goes on, but right now I'm ready to have her home with me.
