Our Mutual Friend

Last Saturday I posted a story about meeting Nancy exactly 50 years ago and I said that we were introduced to each other by a "mutual friend". Well, here she is. Her name is Sandy Eger. This picture was taken by me in September of 1967. We spent a goodly amount of time on the internet this week trying to locate her just to say hello and perhaps thank her for a deed well done a long time ago. We found a lot of people named Sandra Eger on social media, but none seemed to be associated with Cresson, Pennsylvania, or Cresson High School class of 1958.

Nancy knew Sandy because they both worked at Mercy Hospital in Altoona. Sandy was a lab technician. In fact, when I returned from a trip to Vietnam 4 days before our wedding, Nancy drew my blood and gave it to Sandy to complete the required blood test needed to obtain a marriage license. It helps to know the right people to get around the bureaucracy. There was a waiting period between the blood test and the granting of the license that, if required, would have taken us beyond our planned wedding day.

I met Sandy in a local nightclub while I was home on leave from the Academy sometime around Christmas 1964. I remember because, when I was home, I was dating a student nurse at that same Mercy Hospital. She had a 10 PM curfew. So one Friday evening, after I returned her to her dorm, I went clubbing on my own. That's when I met Sandy. After several hours of dancing, drinking, and too much talking, Sandy put 2 and 2 together and told me she knew that student nurse. But, she said, she wouldn't tell if I wouldn't. I didn't. A couple years later she introduced me to Nancy.
