Family and Friend in Pennsylvania

In April we learned that doctors had informed Nancy's Mom that she may have a recurrence of a cancer that was removed a few years ago. Nancy and her sister Elaine worked hard to set up an appointment with doctors in Pittsburgh for their Mom, and on May 1 we drove to PA to help her with arrangements and transportation for that exam. Just this past Thursday we were given the good news that what was thought to be a tumor was nothing more than scar tissue from the previous surgery. We all collectively breathed a sigh of relief on hearing that news.

Nancy and I returned to Huntsville last Tuesday. Too late to post a picture last weekend, but not too early that Nancy didn't get in a quick shopping trip with her much happier Mom (in the center above) and Aunts Jo (on the left) and Nina (on the right).

In the meantime, on Friday (May 4) I drove to Altoona, which is about 14 miles from Gallitzin where Nancy's Mom lives, to look up someone who was a friend through most of grade school and all of high school. In fact, he was the Best Man at my wedding in 1967. It turned out that Jim was taking the afternoon off, so we met and sat on a bench, in the shade, outside of Home Depot for the better part of two hours and caught up an each other's adventures.

The last time I saw Jim was probably 10 years ago. He likes to fish and travels all over the country looking for that ultimate spot to cast his home-made flies. In addition to fly-tying, Jim still bowls...with a 200+ average no less! Since he also likes photography and is thinking about buying a digital camera, we walked to my car to have a look at mine. I couldn't pass up that opportunity to take this picture. While Jim hasn't aged at all since high school, he does dress much more fashionably. As do I.

With the good news about Nancy's Mom, a chance to shop with family, and an opportunity to visit old friends, the short trip to PA was well worth the drive.
